JACKIE CHAN: THE GENEROUS DRAGON What do you do when you're a world-famous superstar and you have a couple of hours of spare time? Well, if you're Jackie Chan, you host a charity event, call it a "party," and make thousands of people happy while raising money for the elderly and for sick kids. On November 18, 2001 Jackie played host to a charity event called "Knight of the Dragon." It was held at the famous SkyDome in Toronto, Canada. Guests were treated to a kung-fu demonstration by local kids, a fashion show featuring some of Jackie's clothing line, several songs, a demonstration by the one and only JC Stunt Team, lots of talk (by Jackie), and a video of some of the highlights of Jackie's career. Jackie entered the arena through the audience and was promptly swarmed by fans. He quickly took the stage and greeted his fans in several languages. He even welcomed the Jackie Chan Fan Club for Kids (he calls it "the Jackie Chan Junior Fan Club") by name! (Click here to see the video) Jackie was very talkative and he answered many questions posed by the local celebrities who were hosting along with him. Jackie sang two songs (Zen Ma Hui and a duet - Ming Ming Bai Bai). Before he began singing, he confessed to being nervous. Of course he sang beautifully even when he was interrupted twice during the songs by fans bringing him flowers on-stage! Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman presented Jackie with a Key to the City of Toronto and spoke very warmly of Jackie. He talked about Jackie being a genuinely nice man and about the good he has done. The fashion show was great fun. Jackie invited local children, fans, and some of his costars from The Tuxedo to model along with him. Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Jason Isaacs, and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky were just a few of the many models. Of course Jackie modeled a few of the outfits himself...strutting across the stage like an experienced runway model. He was definitely having fun doing this! Jackie conducted an auction of items which included Jackie Chan toys, shoes, books, and even the original painting that the event poster was created from. All of the money from the auction went to charity. At one point during the event, a video was shown which included highlights of Jackie's career plus his visit to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Jackie watched the video from on stage and even cringed a few times while viewing himself in a few of the outtakes. Towards the end of the "party" Jackie's stuntmen threw T-shirts and keychains out into the audience. After the event was over, there was a reception at the CN Tower right next door to the SkyDome. Several hundred very lucky people were invited to the party where they could rub elbows with the stars of the movie, mingle with fans from all over the world, and have a photo taken with Jackie! Every time Jackie has extra time during the filming of a movie, he works very hard to earn money for charity. The Toronto event earned thousands of dollars to benefit the Hospital for Sick Children and the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation.
